New TRCN boss vows to instil professionalism in teachers

Abuja, Aug. 22, 2016(NAN) The new Registrar of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Prof. Josiah Oluwasegun Ajiboye has vowed to instil professionalism in teachers and tackle issues that affect teachers’ quality.
Prof. Ajiboye stated this in a media chat with newsmen at the council’s headquarters on Monday in Abuja.
The Registrar said that the TRCN under his watch would intensify the Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) Programme and that the programme would ultimately improve professional competence and commitment.
“I have come to ensure the restoration of the lost glory of the Nigeria teacher vis-à-vis enhanced teacher quality and professionalism”
He stated that majority of Nigerian teachers were out-dated in their academic skills and techniques and as such, it had become evident that they needed urgent on-the-job training for necessary updates.
Ajiboye said that the council had put in place all that was needed for the successful re-introduction of the Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) for teachers across the country.
“The PQE serves as one of the best tools for assessing, admitting and licensing practitioners in any profession”.
He said the TRCN plays a significant role in the employment of teachers to make sure they were qualified and that it had registered over 1.5 million teachers across the country.
Ajiboye also said that the council shall be more aggressive in the area of accreditation, monitoring and supervision of courses and programmes of teacher education institutions in Nigeria.
The Registrar further stated that the council intends to embark on high powered sensitization of stakeholders in all states of the federation in order to generate recognition for the Professional Diploma in Education.
The Professor called on parents to verify the state of teachers who are teaching their children and that they should insist on knowing if the teachers are certified by TRCN.www.nan.com
