LABOUR MINISTER LAUNCHES NATIONAL POLICY ON LABOUR MIGRATION
The Honourable Minister
of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige with support of the International
Organization for Migration (IOM), International Labour Organization (ILO), 18
August, launched the National Policy on Labour Migration.
Sen. Ngige, at the
Federal Secretariat in Abuja, unveiled the National Policy on Labour Migration,
National Electronic Labour Exchange job centres and also inaugurated a
Technical Working Committee and Social Partner Advisory Committee as part of
the mechanism of the project.
Speaking at the launch,
the chief of mission, IOM, Ms Enira KRDZALIC said that the policy addressed the
protection of migrant workers and promotion of their welfare and that of their
families left behind amongst others.
She said that the IOM
has supported the government to develop other initiatives to effectively manage
migration in a more efficient and coherent manner including the establishment
of Migrant Resource Centres in Abuja and Lagos.
Richard Young, the
deputy HOD, stated that the policy has been produced with the joint technical
support of International Labour Organization and the International Organization
for Migration with funding from the European Union.
Young also stated that
the European Union welcomes the adoption of the policy and that it looked
forward to the concrete implementation of the policy. “We are also happy to
witness the inauguration of the two committees, namely the Technical Working
Committee and the Social Partner Advisory Committee, as part of the coordination
mechanism of the project”, he said.
